SENIOR NOTES

Seniors
Our senior team maintained their firm grip at the top of Division 4 with a very comfortable win over bottom side Phelim Bradys on Friday evening, 2 - 22 to 0 - 4.
The Shanes opened up with points from Paddy Gregory, Raymie Fitzpatrick and two from Darren Grant before Phelim Bradys registered their first point from a free. Great work from DavidChief Boyle paved the way for Ben Treanor to finish off a great move by slotting the ball to back of the oppositions net. Further points from Raymie Fitzpatrick, Darren Grant and young Pete O'Brien increased the Shanes lead before Phelim Bradys got another pointed free. The Shanes were really on song now and great points from Damien Brady, Ben Treanor, Darren Grant (his 4th of the half) and big midfielder James Lennon saw take a commanding twelve point lead. Another pointed free Phelim Bradys reduced the gap by one but Pete O'Brien tagged another point for the Shanes just before the break. Half-time score Shane O'Neills 1 - 12 Phelim Bradys 0 - 3.
At half-time manager Marty Lynch withdrew veteran corner-back Davy O'Brien and replaced him with young Liam Gunner Quinn. Liam is another young man who has progressed through the ranks at the club and it was great to see him making his senior debut. He slotted in effortlessly at corner-back and never put a foot wrong throughout the entire second-half. The Shanes began the second-half where they left off in the first at it wasn't long before Damien Brady crashed a shot to the roof of the net leaving umpire Peter O'Brien with no option but to raise the green flag. Further points from James Lennon (2) and Paddy Gregory forged the Shanes further in front before Phelim Bradys registered their fourth and final point of the game. Substitute Kieran Murphy then got in the scoring act with a well taken point before Paddy Gregory got his third point of the game. James Lennon popped over another score, his fourth of the game, before Kieran Murphy got a great point from a very acute angle. The Shanes then introduced their second debutant of the night with JJ McNulty making his first senior appearance. JJ made an immediate impact, laying off the ball to MicheAl Brady who calmly slotted it over the bar. With time almost up the Shanes added a further two points from Damien Brady and Paddy Gregory to leave the final-score 2 - 22 to 0 - 4 in favour of Shane O'Neills.

Minors
Our minor team suffered a disappointing home defeat against Mullaghbawn on Monday evening. On minors went into the game full of confidence following their recent win over Forkhill but on the night they were beaten by a better team. Having said that, if they had had their shooting boots on, it could have been a very different outcome.

U16s
Our U16 team drew with Clann Eireann on Thursday evening but they will view this as a victory thrown away. The Shanes led the game from the very start and looked odds on to take the victory but they slacked off slightly and let the opponents back into the game and Clann Eireann levelled the game up with the last kick off the ball and an equalising goal.

U14s
Our U14s had no game last week.

U12s
On Saturday afternoon our U12s entertained Silverbridge but were narrowly beaten by 4 points. It was nip and tuck the whole way through the game but Silverbridge finished the stronger to clinch victory on a score-line of 0 - 11 to 1 - 4. Despite missing a number of key players the Shanes kept battling right to the very end and could have snatched victory had it not been for fine save by the Silverbridge keeper. Scorers for the Shanes were Amy Mackin 1 - 0, Cian Feehan 0 - 2 and Mark McCabe 0 - 2.

U10s
Our U10 B team put on a magnificent display on Wednesday evening to defeat their Dromintee counter-parts 1 - 4 to 0 - 2. With much of the game played in driving rain the young Shanes put in a tremendous effort to ensure that they finished top of their group and thus qualify for the top two play-off.
Our U10 A team travelled to Correnshigo on Thursday night for a challenge game. This proved to be one of the best underage games of the season with both sides playing some brilliant football which kept spectators fully entertained throughout. The U10 management and players would like to express their thanks to Correnshigo for their hospitality throughout, especially the drinks and crisps after the game. We hope to get a return game in the very near future.

U8s
Our U8s took part in the latest South Armagh blitz on Saturday and by all accounts played some great football along the way. This age group has been improving every week and it is great to some a few new faces amongst the players. Training continues for our U8s every Thursday night at the field from 6.30pm.

NOTES

Seniors

Our senior team returned to action on Sunday in the tight confines of Poyntzpass against a very physical O'Hanlons side and ran out comfortable winners on a sore-line of 0 - 17 to 0 - 7.

The Shanes completely bossed the first-half, scoring 11 points without reply. Brendy Mackin opened the scoring for the Shanes before Raymie Fitzpatrick and Ben Treanor added a further two points. Brendy Mackin landed a further two monster points before Raymie Fitzpatrick got his second of the day. Neil Paul Lennon then got himself on the score-sheet with two good points, one from a free. The Shanes continued to dominate the play and were rewarded with another two great points from Brendy Mackin. Neil Paul Lennon rounded off the first-half scoring with another pointed free.

O'Hanlons made a better start to the second-half, scoring two unanswered points before Brendy Mackin fired over his 6th point of the game. Peter O'Brien followed this up with a pointed free before Darren Grant registered another Shanes score with a well taken point. With the game all but over as a contest the Shanes took the foot of the pedal slightly and allowed O'Hanlons to score four points without reply. Points from Neil Paul Lennon and Brendy Mackin eased the Shanes further ahead again before O'Hanlons got their 7th and final point of the game. Kieran Murphy completed the scoring with a well taken point to see the Shanes run out deserving winners, 0 - 17 to 0 - 7.

A trip to O'Hanlons normally proves a difficult fixture for the Shanes but the lads played with a great attitude on Sunday and the outcome of the game was never in doubt.

Minors

Our minors stepped up a division on Monday night and took on Forkhill at home. The lads played some great football in the game and ran out very comfortable winners. They will have tougher games ahead but if they continue to play like this a few more victories are on the cards.

U16s, U14s, U12s

None of the above teams had games last week.

U10s

Our U10 B team had a busy last week with away games against Killeavy and Carrickcruppen. In pouring rain on Wednesday night they took on Killeavy in what proved to be a very hard fought game and ran out winners by a few points. On Sunday morning they made the short trip to take on Carrickcruppen. This proved to be a highly entertaining game of football with both sides giving their all. Despite missing a number of key players the Shanes fought hard against a very committed home side and ran out one point winners, scoring a goal with virtually the last kick of the game. The B team have a home game against Dromintee on Wednesday night, players asked to be at the club at 6.30pm

Our A team have no league games left but it is hoped to get a couple of challenge games lined up for them. Training for our U10 A team continues every Friday night at the club @ 6.00pm.

U8s

Our U8s took part in a blitz on Saturday in Belleek. This was a great day out for all the children and they played some great football along the way. It was great to see some of the younger children donning the Shanes jersey and putting their coaching into practice. The club would like to thank all the parents who were on hand to help out during the day. Well done also to the Belleek club for hosting a very successful day. Training for our U8s continues every Thursday evening at the field from 6.30pm. The next South Armagh U8 blitz will take place next Saturday, 19th July at 10am in Silverbridge. Players asked to be at the club for 9.30am

Ladies Football

U12s

Our U12 girls travelled to Crossmaglen on Friday night hoping to keep their unbeaten run going and they did this in style with a very comprehensive victory. Despite missing 6 players the girls managed to defeat the home side on a score-line of 6 - 8 to 3 - 2. Given that this is their first year competing in girls football they have done extremely well throughout the season. Best wishes go to Emma Loughran who has broken her wrist bone wishing you a speedy recovery Emma.

SHANES NOTES

Seniors

Our senior team had no game last week. They were scheduled to play Middletown on Friday evening but due to hurling commitments within the Middletown club they was called off.

Minors

Our minors were due to play Belleek last Monday evening but Belleek were unable to field. Following the South Board meeting last week our minor team have moved up to play the remainder of the teams in Division 1 who failed to qualify in the top four of their league and therefore didn't go on to All County football.

U16s

Our U16 team had no game last week.

U14s

Our U14s fell to disappointing defeat against Mullaghbawn on Tuesday evening. Whilst it hasn't been a great season for the lads they continue to battle away and must be praised for the effort and commitment throughout the year.

U12s

Our U12s had no game last week.

U10s

Our U10 A team travelled to Silverbridge last Wednesday searching for another win. However, despite having a lot of possession they left their shooting boots at home and were beaten by the home side but the result could have been a lot different had the team taken their chances. In saying that, they tried hard and battled right until the final whistle. Our U10 B team were scheduled to have a game on Sunday morning but it was cancelled due to cemetery mass in Carrickcruppen.

U8s

Training for our U8s continues every Thursday evening at the field from 6.30pm. All boys and girls in this age group are welcome to come along and join in.

Girls Football

This past week saw both the U-14 and U-12 teams advance in their respective championships. First up were the U-14 side who met Whitecross at home on Monday last. A tight first half ended with Shanes grabbing two quick goals and they pressed home their advantage in the second half to run out worthy winners despite a spirited fight back by Whitecross. This was an excellent team performance and all players in the squad played a part. Final score Shane O Neills 6-8 Whitecross 1-6. A quarter-final tie now lies ahead against the winners of Carrickcruppen and St Peters.

The U-12 side travelled to Lurgan to face St Peters on Friday evening and began without 5 regulars currently on holiday. That didn't hamper their performance as a first half scoring blitz killed the game as a contest and Shanes ran out easy winners to progress to the semi- final of the All County Championship. Final score Shane O Neills 9-12 St Peters 0-5.

In their first year in ladies football the U-12s remain unbeaten and are also in the league semi-final with one league fixture remaining which is away to Crossmaglen this Friday, 11th July. Well done to the management team of Peter Lynch, Brendan McGuire, Clare Carroll and Freda Mackin and to all the girls for a great first year of girls football at the Shanes.

shane O'Neills Notes for this week

Seniors

Another vital win for our senior team on Friday night sees them maintain top spot in the league. Forkhill is never an easy place to go and get a win and so it proved with the Shanes winning by just two points 0-8 to 0-6. Winning games is not all about playing fancy football, sometimes you have to dig in and grind out a result and thats exactly what the Shanes did against a very committed Forkhill side. It may not have been the prettiest game but most importantly its another two points on the board.

U12s

Our U12s kept their impressive league form going on Saturday with a comfortable win over Mullaghbawn. Another very work-man like performance saw the Shanes emerge with another great win.

U10s

It was a great week for our U10s with both the A and B teams picking up good wins. On Friday evening our A team took on Killeavy and ran out deserving winners for their first victory of the year. Great credit must go to the whole team with the goalkeeper and all the defenders working hard to stop the Killeavy forwards. The midfield duo worked hard from start to finish, breaking up attacks and playing great balls into our forwards. Our forwards were really on their game and were always ready for the quick ball and they took their chances when they came along. This was a great win for the children and a great confidence booster for the rest of the year. On Wednesday evening our B team put on a tremendous display to beat Dorsey Emmets. Once again the team played some brilliant football with every one of them, from goalkeeper to corner forward, putting in a great effort to ensure that they notched up another win. This team has shown great spirit throughout the year and their efforts are being rewarded on the pitch. Well done to all our U10s.

U8s

As part of the fun day our U8s played Belleek in a challenge game. This proved to be a great match with players from both sides putting on a great display. Well done to everyone involved with our U8s, from the managers right through to the parents who are always on hand to help out. Training for our U8s continues every Thursday evening at the pitch @6.30pm.

Fun Day

The club hosted a very successful fun day last Saturday for all the families of the area. It turned out to be a great days craic with bouncy castles, slides, sumo wrestling, buckin broncos a real good family day out. The days entertainment ended with a BBQ and music by the Men from Atlantis. The club would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to make the day the great success it was and it is hoped that this will become an annual event for the club.

Birthday Greetings

A big happy birthday this week the one and only Patricia Feehan. She tried to keep it quiet but somebody always lets the cat out of the bag.

Well Done

Well done to the Armagh team following their victory over Down on Sunday which sees them progress to another Ulster Final. Lets hope for a repeat performance against Fermanagh in the final.

Condolences

Everyone at the club would like to extend their sympathy to the family of the late James Jemso Lennon. Jemso was the father of our former players Seamus, Damien and Cathal and grand-father of our current players James, Neil Paul and Lee. He was also the uncle of Joe, one of our current U8 managers.

SHANES NOTES FOR THIS WEEK

Seniors

Our senior team continue to set the pace at the top of the table with a hard fought but ultimately deserved win over fellow promotion hopefuls Eire Og on Friday night. This was always going to be a tough game and so it proved with the Shanes running out winners by three points, 1 10 to 1 07.

An early point from Darren Grant opened the scoring for the Shanes before Eire Og levelled soon after. A free from Kieran Murphy put the Shanes back in front but Eire Og went ahead from the penalty spot after the Shanes keeper, Cormac Duffy, brought down an Eire Og forward. Another free from Kieran Murphy left just one between the sides again but Eire Og stretched their lead again with two unanswered points. A great point from Ben Treanor reduced the gap to two points but a point from Eire Og right on half-time saw them lead by three at the interval, 1 4 to 0 4.

The Shanes began the second-half in blistering fashion and scored four unanswered points to put them one in front, the points coming from Paddy Gregory (3) and Ben Treanor (1). The Shanes were really flying now and a great ball from Micheal Brady found Kieran Murphy loitering on the edge of the square and it was he who rose highest to fist the ball to the net. The Shanes could sense victory now but they were soon reduced to fourteen men for the remainder of the game. A pointed free from Eire Og reduced the gap to three points again but Paddy Gregory replied with a free of his own, his fourth point of the game, to edge the Shanes further in front. With time rapidly running out Eire Og were piling on the pressure and two quick points from them left just two between the sides going into the closing minutes. But the Shanes dug deep and Brendy Mackin fired over a great point to ensure that the Shanes unbeaten run remained intact as they ran out deserving winners on a score-line of 1 10 to 1 7.

This was a game which saw the tremendous fighting spirit and never say die attitude of this Shanes squad. They were three behind at the break but came out in the second half and fought their way back into the game. Even when they went down to fourteen men they dug deeper again and showed tremendous fight to take all the points from the game.

Minors

Our minors recorded another great win on Monday night against Culloville. This proved to be a very physical and tough encounter but the Shanes fought hard and played some brilliant football at times to run out deserved winners.

U16s

Our U16s got another league win under their belts on Thursday evening with a six point win over near neighbours Carrickcruppen. Despite trailing at half-time the lads came out and put in a better, if not convincing display, to take home the points.

U10s

After a number of weeks of inactivity both our U10 teams were out on Sunday morning, with our A team at home to Mullaghbawn and our B team away to Killeavy. It wasn’t good morning for our A team they were beaten by a very good Mullagbawn side. Despite having a lot of possession the Shanes failed to convert it into scores but to their credit they kept battling away until the final whistle. Our B team had better luck when they defeated Killeavy. This was a great performance from the entire team and nothing less than they deserve.

U8s

Our U8s had a friendly game with Correnshigo on Thursday evening. This proved to be a great evenings craic for everyone with players on both sides playing some great entertaining football. Training for U8s continues every Thursday evening at the pitch from 6.30pm. All boys and girls in this age group are welcome to come along.

Family Fun Day

The club is hosting a family fun day for all families in the area on Saturday 28th June starting @ 2.00pm. Events and activities on the day include a bouncy castles, bucking bronco, bungee tram poling, slides, sumo wrestling, races etc. These will be followed by a B-B-Q and music from The Men from Atlantis. Everyone is welcome to come along for a great family day out. A meeting is being held in the clubhouse tonight, 23rd June @ 7.45pm to discuss and make preparations for the fun day. All underage managers and mentors from U8s right up are asked to come along to this meeting. Anyone else who would be interested in helping with organising the fun day is also encouraged to come along i.e. club members, parents of our underage players etc.
